Through the invention of alternating current, power could be distributed at higher voltage and then 'stepped' up or down as needed with transformers to power multiple devices, large and small, from the same originating power source. The only dictating principles of that being first, the direct relationship of power as a product of voltage and current (P=VI), and second the frequency of the alternating current; set to the lowest speed at which the flicker of street lighting is undetectable by the human eye (60 Hz). It is these two principles which guide the headquarters for the Electric Power Research Institute; the former as a system of circulation, the latter as the proportioning element both within the space and defining the space itself. |
